THE WISDOM SERIES
Exploring the Depth and Wisdom of Proverbs
A proverb is concise. Its wisdom is not.
The Wisdom Series is a detailed look at the book of Proverbs, giving each saying time to be understood and explored in greater depth. Rather than simply moving from one proverb to the next, the series takes a closer look at what each saying means and how its wisdom can apply to everyday life. It encourages readers to pause, think, and reflect on the lessons found in Proverbs, showing how these simple sayings can offer practical guidance and wisdom for life today.
A few carefully chosen words can hold an idea that takes much longer to understand. Their meaning may become clearer over time as we look at them from different points of view, connect them with our own experiences, or simply take the time to think about them. Sometimes, a simple saying can have more to teach us than we first realise. By slowing down and giving it our full attention, we may discover new meaning and insight that was not obvious at first.
EXPLORE
The Wisdom Series takes the time to do this. Each proverb becomes an invitation to stop, think, ask questions, and look more closely at what it is saying. Some of these sayings may be familiar to us, but that does not mean we have understood all they have to offer. By taking time to explore each one, we can look beyond the words on the page and discover deeper meaning, fresh insights, and practical wisdom for everyday life.

WISDOM FOR MANY PARTS OF LIFE
Proverbs speaks into more than one area of life.
The Proverbs speak into the stuff of real life; the people we love, the decisions we make, the words we choose, the work we do, the ambitions we pursue, the conflicts we face and the character we are becoming. Their words are often remarkably brief, yet they open onto questions that are anything but small. What does wisdom look like when a relationship is strained, when success changes us, when our judgment is clouded, or when the right course is not immediately clear? Each proverb brings its own insight to these questions. Give it time, and its few words can begin to reveal more than might first be apparent not only the particular wisdom contained in the saying itself, but its place within the wider and remarkably rich landscape of wisdom found throughout Proverbs.

SEE HOW A PROVERB UNFOLDS
A few words can open into a much wider exploration.
“A gentle answer turns away wrath,
but a harsh word stirs up anger.” (Proverbs 15:1)
Proverbs 15:1 gives us a particular way of looking at anger and how it can be met. A gentle answer can turn wrath away, while a harsh word can stir it up. In these few words, we are shown a contrast between two ways of responding, and the very different directions they can take us.
There is more to consider here than the choice between a gentle word and a harsh one. What makes an answer gentle? Can a person be gentle and still speak firmly? When is it wise to hold back, and when does something need to be said? The proverb presents a way of thinking about anger, but that way of thinking can be considered from many different sides.
Anger may also have something behind it that needs to be heard. A calm response can prevent a difficult moment from becoming worse, yet calming the moment does not necessarily resolve the matter itself. Sometimes it is wise to quiet things down before anything more is said. At other times, the real issue still needs to be faced. A gentle answer, then, is not simply a way of making anger disappear. It may also be a way of keeping anger from deciding what happens next.
Other Proverbs bring their own thoughts to this same area of life. Some speak about controlling anger, others about the power of words, the value of listening, the place of correction, or the need for good judgment. Some reinforce what we find here, while others bring a different emphasis. Read together, these sayings allow us to consider the subject more fully and to see how one piece of wisdom can sit alongside another.
A short proverb can therefore take us further than its few words might suggest. It can lead us to consider not only what it says, but the way of thinking it presents and the wisdom behind it. The Wisdom Series takes the ideas and ways of thinking found in Proverbs and explores them more fully, bringing different sayings and perspectives together to shed light on what they have to say.

WHAT THE SERIES OFFERS
The Wisdom Series offers a considered and accessible treatment of the ideas found in Proverbs. It gives those ideas the attention needed to develop them fully, allowing the thinking behind each position to be examined and considered in greater depth.
The series takes time to consider the reasoning behind a position, the circumstances in which it applies, and the different questions that may arise from it. It does not seek to reduce wisdom to simple formulas, but to give proper attention to the ideas being presented and the implications they may have.
It also offers room for thoughtful reflection. The series considers ideas from different sides, looks at the difficulties they may involve, and considers how they relate to the realities of life. This gives the reader an opportunity to engage with the material rather than simply move from one explanation to another.
The Wisdom Series is intended to become a substantial body of work that can be read from beginning to end, returned to over time, or used as a place to spend more time with a particular idea. Its purpose is to offer thoughtful insight into the wisdom presented in Proverbs and to give that wisdom the depth of consideration it deserves.
